Deep Red With Deep Fry

Of course sake was served at our Livermore home tempura dinner party in January,  but I was surprised by the excitement over the red wines. Brown/Foreman supplied the event with a variety deep red Zins and Cabs from Sonoma County, CA (about 2 hours drive from Livermore).   Tempura is a great meal to enjoy with people you care for because it’s conducive to long peaceful conversations.  We all sat around the wok and skewered meats and fresh vegetables.  My wife found an easy tempura batter recipe and before long we were forging golden-brown delights filled with shrimp, sweet potatoes, eggplant and carrots.  The pace is slow, not gluttonous.  The methodical steps are: choose something, batter it, place it in the wok, taste your wine, talk about your personal tempura strategy, withdraw your hot morsel, place on plate to cool, taste your wine, devour, repeat.  Can’t wait to do it again.
