Celebrate 5/1/2011

2007 Bent Creek Zinfandel, Livermore Valley

Almost ten years ago thousands of innocent lives were taken from us when our country was viciously attacked on September 11, 2001.  Many of us sat glued to the TV watching in horror as the two planes collided with the twin towers.  As the seemingly impervious twin towers fell, our safety and freedom as a country came into question.  We will never forget the images of those helpless victims and the brave men and women who ran toward the danger to try to save their fellow Americans.

As if the New York attack was not enough, we soon learned that a third plane had crashed into the Pentagon, the headquarters for the Department of Defense.  It was becoming ever more clear that an orchestrated terror-generating event was underway.

Then there was United flight 93, the only plane that did not reach its intended target that day.  It was speculated that the target for that attack would have been the White House or the State Capitol in Washington D.C., but the heroic actions of those brave passengers, one from our own Livermore Valley, thwarted that assault and brought flight 93 down in a Pennsylvania field.

As a result of the attacks we found ourselves faced with an old enemy who had risen again.  We were used to this enemy killing Americans on foreign soil, but now the fight was extended onto our own homeland.  The al Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Ladin, took credit for the slaying, flaunted his organization and cheered at the pain he helped deliver.

Tonight we learn that the decade long manhunt is over as Osama Bin Laden has been pronounced dead.  This brings little in the way of closure for those who lost loved ones and will never be made whole again, but it is still a reason for celebration and remembrance.

Which Livermore Valley wine are you celebrating with tonight on the news that Osama Bin Laden’s scheming days are over?  At our house, we’ve chosen the 2007 Bent Creek Zinfandel.  Or, if your looking for another wine that speaks to the occasion, then the McGrail Patriot Cabernet Sauvignon might be just what you need.

With the passing of time, it is so easy to forget about the tragedy of 9-11.  We need to remember and we want to take this day to recognize the many brave lives that have been sacrificed during this decade-long hunt.  We thank each of you who have gone overseas to put your lives in harm’s way to pursue justice and protect our freedom.  We also want to thank those family members at home who have had to let their loved ones go.

Thank you sincerely.
